~~ Beaver Fever ~~
The leader of the expedition gave me a list of things to get for the adventure. One of the items was "Get a water stick do you do not get "Beaver Fever." What? Beaver Fever?? Of course, I laughed for obvious reason...until get explained what beaver fever. Then, it wasn't so funny.
Beaver fever is an intestinal infection caused by a microscopic parasite known as Giardia lamblia. It is caused by ingesting water cantaminted by animals (beavers) that live in or near water and poop in it.
To prevent contracting this parasite, it is important to use a "water stick" that filters 99.9999% of all ickies one might get from drinking water in the wild.

~~ Cay ~~
I ran into my neighbor Cay this morning while we were walking the dogs. She asked questions about my adventure.
"Are you going to be out in the woods?" Well, actually Alaska tundra.
"Is it going to be cold?" Cool, and maybe some rain.
"Will you go out in the rain, and how can you take photographs in the rain?" Yes. Rain or shine, and I have a raincoat for my gear.
"Are you sleeping outside?" In a tent, and hopefully with a dog.
"Will there be bears?" Yes. And other wildlife, too.
"Will you have to pee outside?" Of course.
"Will you have to poop outside? Of course.
"Have you ever done that?" Hell no!
"Well you had better start practicing!"

Getting Ready for an Adventure...IS an Adventure!
As I a get ready for my Nome, Alaska, Gold Expedition adventure, I realized that getting ready for an adventure IS an adventure in and of itself.
I had to learn what a "water straw" is and how to use it. And "Frog Togs" were never in my vocabulary prior to this.
Even the mental preparation is an adventure, as I will be doing things I've never done with people I've never met. And the things I will be doing will not be easy things. We will be hiking miles upon miles everyday in unknown Alaska tundra. I will be hauling camera equipment through this, using my monopod as a walking stick.
I will be eating outside, fighting bugs, and holstering bear spray. For two weeks, I will be living in heightened state of constant awareness.
I am sure it will be absolutely exhausting...in a good way.
I had to buy a new wardrobe of camo cargo pants, tops and camo boots.
